Every so often a wedding day comes along where the venue, the light, the people, and the details all seem to agree with each other — and this was one of them. John and I had the honor of photographing and filming a wedding at the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, Autograph Collection, and it turned out to be exactly the kind of day we live for: warm, unhurried, full of real emotion, and set against some of the most beautiful architecture in all of Southern California.
As an Orange County–based photography and videography duo, our style is aesthetically editorial with a documentary heart. The Venue: Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano
If you've never been, the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano sits in the heart of historic downtown San Juan Capistrano, right beside the iconic Mission itself. It's a hacienda-style hotel in the Autograph Collection, and everywhere you look there's texture: hand-painted Spanish tile, stone-columned arcades, sculptural olive trees, terracotta pots, and stucco walls that turn golden as the afternoon light moves across them.
The heart of the property is the Landmark Courtyard — an open-air space wrapped in stone arcades and strung with Edison-bulb lights, with a single olive tree anchoring one end. It's where this couple said their vows and later danced their first dance, and it photographs and films like a dream at every hour of the day.
What makes this venue so special for us as an editorial wedding photographer and videographer team is how much it does for you before you even lift a camera. The architecture is the backdrop. The light is soft and warm. Getting Ready & The Details
The day began quietly, with the bride slipping into a sleek satin gown and a cathedral-length lace veil in one of the Inn's getting-ready suites — sunlight pooling across the Spanish-tile floor behind her.
We're detail people, and this wedding rewarded that. The bride's Badgley Mischka heels — the ones with the little pearl bows — got their moment on the venue's hand-painted tile steps and again perched on the edge of a blue-and-white tile fountain. The florals leaned into a warm, autumnal palette: peach and terracotta dahlias, ranunculus, tulips, and airy white blooms in earthy pots. Even the styling of the vow books and taper candles felt intentional. These are the frames that, years from now, bring the whole day rushing back.
The First Look
Before the ceremony, the couple shared a first look in the Inn's gardens. There's something we love about a first look — it's private, it's honest, and it's usually the first deep breath of the whole day. Moments like these are exactly why we shoot with a documentary heart. Some of our favorite images aren't posed at all; they're the ones you can't plan for and can't get back.
Portraits at the Great Stone Church Ruins
For portraits, we walked the couple over to the Great Stone Church ruins — and this is where the Inn at the Mission truly sets itself apart from any other Orange County venue. Standing beneath that enormous stone arch, the two of them looked almost cinematic, dwarfed by centuries of history. We also captured a few editorial frames on the Inn's tiled staircase, the bride's veil cascading down the steps, and even a candid walk through historic downtown San Juan Capistrano. Editorial polish, documentary honesty — right next to each other.
The Wedding Party
The wedding party palette was so well done: bridesmaids in rust and terracotta gowns, groomsmen in classic black tuxedos, and bouquets echoing those same peachy tones. Against the cream stucco and Spanish tile of the Inn, the whole group looked effortlessly cohesive. We grabbed relaxed, joyful group portraits on the tiled steps and in the courtyards — the kind that feel like the people in them, not stiff line-ups.
The Ceremony in the Landmark Courtyard
The ceremony took place in the Landmark Courtyard, guests seated in wooden cross-back chairs beneath the string lights, the olive tree standing quietly behind the couple. This is where a documentary approach earns its keep — the glances, the held hands, the laughter during the vows, and the pure joy of the recessional as they walked back up the aisle as newlyweds. We were rolling for all of it, photo and cinema together, so nothing got missed.
Golden Hour & Reception
As the sun dropped, the courtyard transformed. The Edison bulbs glowed, the tables were set with warm florals and candlelight, and a gold arched mirror displayed the seating chart at the entrance. The couple's first dance happened right there in the Landmark Courtyard, framed by the olive tree and the twinkling lights overhead — one of those scenes that barely needs anything from us but presence and good timing.
